The ideal candidates are responsible to perform the physical duties involved with cleanup and/or production duties in both sawmill and planer environments including, but not limited to:

• Sweeping and shoveling, walking on even and uneven surfaces, pushing a wheelbarrow and using a power saw.
• The candidate must be able to lift up to a maximum of 50 lbs.
• Preference will be given to candidates who exhibit attention to detail, a safety-conscious attitude, and impeccable attendance. 

Wages are $32.09 an hour as per the collective agreement.

The Carrier Group of Companies is pleased to announce some updates to the previous shutdowns at our Tabor and Big River Mills.

The Tabor Planer in Prince George will run a single shift the week of May 4^th, with further operations to be announced on a week by week basis.

The Carrier Forest Products sawmill in Big River, Saskatchewan will operate on a limited basis from May 4^th to June 5^th but the planer and Shipping will remain down.

Tabor Sawmill will continue operations, as will Carrier Manufacturing and the Bar K Ranch. Shipping will continue at the Tabor Mill.

We are pleased with these positive changes taking place and hope this will be a sign of good things to come as we all continue to flatten the curve.

To better describe the services our Prince George fabrication shop provides, we have undergone a logo change. As always, our services include: machining, CNC plasma, welding, hydraulics, mechanical, pneumatics, fabrication, and engineering.

Carrier Lumber Ltd. recently congratulated employee Gerry Cunningham for his 50 years of service at Carrier.

Carrier Lumber Ltd. recently congratulated Mr. Gerry Cunningham for his 50 years of service at Carrier in Prince George.

Joining Carrier in 1967, Gerry started in our log yard when Carrier Lumber's mill on Willow Cale Road was a brand-new start up. He worked his way up over the years, and now works as Tabor's Planer Maintenance and Planerman Technician.

As Bill Kordyban says, Gerry teaches our newest recruits in a way only someone who has journied with the company this long can do. His wisdom and expertise are invaluable.

While he is most definitely our longest ever serving employee, he and his fellow 2017 long-service award recipients prove that if you haven't been with Carrier for at least ten years, "then you're just a newbie!"

We are grateful for Gerry's service and dedication to his job. His eye for detail and craftsmanship are highly valued traits at Carrier and he is always a smiling face on the job.

Thank you, Gerry, for all you do for the company.

Reg Foot of Carrier Lumber was honoured this week as the BCWLA named him the 2017 BCWLA Lumberman of the Year. We are very proud of Reg's accomplishment and his dedication to Carrier. These are excerpts from Reg's interview from harder.blog's Paul Harder.

1. How did you get into the business?
Started playing squash with Terry Kuzma (previous Carrier Lumber’s Woodlands Manager) about 20 years ago and he asked if I would ever be interested in a career change.. the rest is history.

2. When did you join Carrier Lumber and how long have you been Lumber Sales Manager?
Joined Carrier in September ’99 under the direction of Ron Gettling, Sales Manager and became sales manager in April, 2002.

3. Any mentors?
Absolutely.. Gord Wilkinson – my first sales manager when I was in newspaper advertising sales. Gord gave me my first break into sales and taught me some foundational sales techniques that I still practice today. Curt Garland, President of Lomak Bulk Carriers Corp – this was my second job in sales. Curt was instrumental in helping me transition from retail sales to an industrial sales environment. Ron Gettling, retired sales manager of Carrier Lumber. Ron taught me the finer points of mill lumber sales and its time-honoured traditions.

4. Others besides bloggers who have had a positive influence on your career?
My wife Sylvia, for supporting me throughout all the trials and tribulations of the lumber industry and for being my soundboard on the challenging days and helping me stay focused. Bill Kordyban, President of Carrier Lumber, for showing me resiliency, loyalty, and calmness in spite of some major market challenges.

5. What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the industry?
Technology has really advanced the way we manufacture lumber, allowing us to be competitive in very challenging markets. As far as lumber sales, technology has changed the way we confirm orders, but thankfully it has not replaced the power of a customer-mill relationship. I hope that never happens.

6. What’s the most exotic destination you have shipped lumber to? 
Mongolia

Carrier Lumber Ltd. participated this year in the Northern Lights Estate Winery's 2017 Climb for Cancer. We had over 30 employees, family and friends participate. The event itself raised over $25 000, with all proceeds being donated to the Kordyban Lodge here in Prince George.

The facility acts as a home away from home for family and loved ones of patients undergoing cancer treatment at the Univeristy Hospital of Northern British Columbia. The Canadian Cancer Society has found that a welcoming, caring environment helps meet the practical and emotional needs of those in treatment for cancer away from home.

Passing with a 94% rating during our OHS Audit, the Bar K Ranch becomes the first small ranching operation in BC to earn the prestigious 'Certificate of Recognition' from AgSafe Canada.

Carrier Forest Products Ltd. was nominated for the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership's Exporter of the Year Award.

We finished in the top 5 international exporters for all of Saskatchewan based on an adjudication of:

• the introduction of new products/services into new markets
• a significant increase in export sales
• a high ratio of export sales to total sales
• a positive impact on the community through job creation

Some of the ladies (pictured below) from Head Office toured Tabor's sawmill and planer earlier this month. The tour provided opportunities to see firsthand where the data and information received at Head Office comes from. It also provided insights into the size of our operations, recent technological advancements at the mill, and expertise that each Tabor employee has related to lumber manufacturing.

James Kordyban & Caitlin Roch (pictured below) recently attended CNC's NorthWorks Career Fair.  The event was successful and Carrier would love to welcome all of the potential new employees we encountered.

Carrier recogonizes the value of having great educational facilities in Prince George and would like to commend all the hard working students.

Carrier Lumber LTD would like to thank all of the people who visited our booth at NAWAL 2015.  The show was a success and we welcome all the opportunities it brought for 2016.

 Our new Gilbert planer boasts an impressive 32 cutting knives and can potentially double the speed at which our previous planer operated.  The new planer produces a smooth, glass-like finish, which is a perfect fit for Carrier's Premium 2 and better.

BIG RIVER, Sask. – The official reopening of the province’s largest saw mill took place Tuesday morning in Big River, Saskatchewan.

The refurbished mill northwest of Prince Albert currently employs about 90 people with another dozen workers on the way.

Saskatchewan Economy Minister Boyd says the mill closed in 2006 due, in part, to the housing market overseas and in the United States at the time.

He says layoffs were very tough on the community and Tuesday was a very happy day for Big River.

B.C.-based Carrier Forest Products announced in 2011 that it was establishing a new saw mill and planer mill development after purchasing the old mill from its previous owner.

Premier Brad Wall says the up and running Big River saw mill will account for over 40 per cent of Saskatchewan’s lumber production capacity.

The mill has a capacity to produce 250 million board feet worth of lumber annually.

“We are pleased with the support from the Government of Saskatchewan in working to ensure a long-term timber supply and facilitating educational assistance of $500,000 for skilled labour and operator training,” said Bill Kordyban, Carrier Forest Products president.

Over 250 harvesting, trucking and reforestation jobs are expected to be created through a multiplier effect.

Vancouver's NSDA Architects is the winner of the first Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) Award, handed out Monday, March 3rd as part of the 10th annual Wood WORKS! BC Wood Design Awards. The architectural firm is being recognized for its innovative use of wood certified to the SFI Standard in the new Kordyban Lodge, a Canadian Cancer Society care facility located in Prince George, BC.

"It's an honour to receive this inaugural award and be recognized by both SFI and the Wood WORKS! BC program for NSDA's work on the Kordyban Lodge," says Jerry Doll, Partner at NSDA. "We are continually striving to create spirited and innovative architecture that showcases wood at its finest while responding thoughtfully to community needs." 

The lodge, which contains wood products from certified sources the majority of which are certified to the SFI standard, provides a comfortable and peaceful 'home away from home' for cancer patients and their caregivers. The stunning wood building spans 25,000 square feet and includes 36 beds, a meditation room, lounge, family room, massage therapy room and more.

It's widely known that the use of wood products in buildings of this nature goes a long way towards improving the mental wellbeing of patients, who are exposed to natural materials during their treatment process.

Wood certified to the SFI Standard used in the facility includes several products supplied by the Sinclair Group of Companies and Winston Global Lumber Ltd., including engineered roof trusses, pre-fabricated walls, studs, sheathing plywood, and LVL.

"Kordyban Lodge is a showcase of the warmth, beauty, versatility and durability of wood from sustainably managed forests," says Kathy Abusow, SFI President and CEO. "Future forests require responsible forestry and this project is a prime example of the positive contribution that building with wood from sustainably managed forests can make, particularly in a region where the community is supported by the forestry sector."

As the North American leader in sustainable forest management, SFI supports projects such as the Kordyban Lodge that use renewable, responsibly harvested building materials. SFI acknowledges the important role projects like this play in promoting wood as an economical, environmental and socially responsible building material.

It was a historic day on January 30, 2014 as Carrier Forest's Big River, SK mill loaded its' first truck to one of our many customers eager to receive high quality lumber. The planer mill started up Nov 26/13 on single shift and is expected to add the second shift later this spring. The mill is able to produce up to 220,000,000 fbm at full production.

Carrier Forest Product's Big River, SK mill produced its first lift of rough lumber on Tuesday, September 3rd. The mill will produce 2x3 through 2 x 10 8'-16' lumber. The planer is scheduled to start up later in the year.

The Export Award was awarded to a company who has demonstrated excellence in pursuing international market opportunities.

While consistency of our lumber has been one of our hallmarks for years, the new autograding system will continue to ensure we continue to be an industry leader in the manufacturing of quality lumber. Improved throughput and consistency are the main advantages noted so far.

Extensive renovations to both the interior and exterior were completed last week to the shipping office. The renovations were widely appreciated by both mill personnel and truck drivers. Don Ramsay, Carrier Lumber’s Shipper noted “The new office complete with enhanced air conditioning makes it a lot more comfortable place to work!”

In response to the devastating impacts of the Mountain Pine Beetle, the Legislative Assembly of BC has appointed a special committee to examine and make recommendations about mid-term timber supply in B.C. Numerous public hearings were held throughout the province to gain feedback from all interested parties. The feedback gained from these meetings are critical on determining the best course of action on timber supply allocations.

Effective June 15, 2012, Carrier Lumber no longer owns and operates Lakeside Reload, a lumber reload facility located in Williams Lake, B.C.

Effective February 6th, 2012, Carrier Lumber will change from steel to polyester strapping. In addition to the polyester strapping Carrier will begin to use grooved dunnage to prevent breaking of the strapping and to prevent tearing of the lumber wrap.
